What is On-Page SEO? A Complete Guide to Key Activities & Best Practices

Introduction Of On Page in SEO

On Page SEO means the improvements made on the pages of our website which make the website better for both search engines (like google, Bing, Yahoo etc.) and users.

That is, On Page SEO is the first important process of website optimization in which the content and many other elements present inside the website are optimized in such a way that it can rank on the first page of the search engines’ SERPs (Search Engine Result Page). Today in this blog we will discuss in detail about On Page SEO and what tasks are there in it.

Why is On Page SEO important?

Today every minute and every second millions of people are searching something or the other on Google, so if you want your website to appear at the top of those search results of Google, then On Page SEO is mandatory.

These are the On Page SEO Activities:

Content Optimization

Optimize all URLs with target keywords.

Optimize content keyword density

Prevent keyword cannibalization

Optimize headings

Optimize Title Tag

Optimize Meta Description

Image Optimization

Optimize Internal Linking

Optimize External Linking

Content Optimization

There should be at least 500 to 1000 words of content on any page of your website and your content should be unique and provide value to the user. Keywords should be used in a natural way in the content. The user should get what he has come to our website with, i.e. there should be a solution to your user’s query in full detail and it should be written in easy language, which means it can be easily read and understood by the users.

On-Page SEO is incomplete until your content provides a solution to the user’s query, is unique and original, and can be easily read and understood.

Optimize all URLs with target keywords.

Do you know that just like your house has a fixed address, similarly a website and webpage also have an address, which is called URL. The full form of URL is Uniform Resource Locator. It is the address of any website or webpage, by which you can find and open that page on the internet.

According to SEO, the URL of the webpage should be short and clear and it should also include our focus keyword because a short and clear URL is better than a long and complicated URL. And one important thing is that always dash (-) should be used in URLs, not underscore (_).

Optimize content keyword density

Keyword density means “how many times a particular keyword is used in your website content compared to the total number of words in your content?”

Formula:- (Number of keywords / Total number of words) × 100

Example: – Suppose you wrote a blog of 1000 words and in it you used the keyword “SEO Tips” 10 times, then the density of that keyword will be 1%.

Google notices what topic the content of your webpage is about and what is the role of the target keyword in it. But just stuffing keywords multiple times will not rank your website.

It is important to use keywords in a natural way, relevant and balanced way.

If keywords are used incorrectly in the content, Google may consider it as “keyword stuffing” and rank your website down.

According to SEO experts, keyword density between 1% – 2.5% in content or blog is considered safe and effective. If it is more than this, the content may look “spammy”.

Keyword Cannibalization

When two or more web pages of our website are targeting the same keyword, then none of your pages are able to rank correctly. This condition is called Keyword Cannibalization.

This confuses Google as to which page to rank for which keyword and the result is that none of your pages are able to rank correctly.

How to fix Keyword Cannibalization?

  • If both the pages are similar, then merge them into a single page and redirect the other page 301.
  • If you want to keep both the pages but want to give priority to one, then tell Google with the canonical tag which page is the master.
  • Set a unique primary keyword for each page and optimize the content accordingly.
  • Make the internal links of your website such that both Google and the user can clearly understand which page is the main page for which keyword.
  • Remove, update, or redirect pages that have little content and are eating up keywords

Optimize headings

A good SEO article should be written in the same way as we read a book, which makes it easy to read that article,Headings are used to give the content the right structure. This makes it easy for the search engine to understand the topic of the content and also makes it easier for the user to read

There are mainly 3 headings tags H1, H2, and H3

Always remember that any webpage has only one H1 tag and there can be any number of H2 and H3 according to the webpage. H2 and H3 are used to organize the content and you can also include your keywords naturally in the headings

Title Tag

When we search a keyword in a search engine, a list of websites opens in SERP, then a blue hyperlinked title appears just before the URL of any website, this is called title tag

Always remember that every webpage should have a unique and keyword-friendly title. The title tag should be less than 60 characters and should include the main keyword so that it can attract the user to click.

Meta Description

The short description of the webpage that appears in the search result just below the title tag in the search engine’s SERP is called Meta Description.

Remember that Meta Description is always 150-160 characters long and should contain your main keywords. It gives information to the user and encourages them to click. Meta Description also helps in increasing the click-through rate (CTR).

Image Optimization

Image Optimization means that all the images used in our website should have ALT tag written on them. Images do not speak, but if their name and ALT tag are correct then Google can understand them.

Please note that all the images used in the website should be compressed to reduce their size and as far as possible the latest image version (SVG) should be used so that the load time of the webpage can be reduced.

Internal Linking

Interlinking the web pages of your own website with other related web pages so that both the visitor and Google get better navigation is called Internal Linking.

Internal Linking is done through a meaningful anchor text, so our anchor text should be optimized. Internal Linking reduces bounce rate, Google understands the structure of the site, the user gets more information.

External Linking

Have you ever noticed that when you are reading any content on a website, some text appears hyperlinked in the middle of the content, that text is called Anchor text in the language of SEO. When we click on that text, we reach some other website, this is called External Linking. When we give a link to an external, trustworthy website in our article, Google feels that you have used an external source to provide some value, this increases the credibility of your site.
